Vietnam’s Techcombank may be preparing for one of its biggest foreign investment moves yet.
The bank is reportedly in separate talks with BNP Paribas and KB Kookmin Bank over the sale of a 15% stake. The deal could be worth around $2 billion, according to people familiar with the discussions.
Nothing has been signed yet. Still, the talks are significant because Techcombank does not currently have a major foreign strategic investor.
That could soon change.
Techcombank Is Reportedly Seeking a 15% Stake Sale
Techcombank is exploring the sale of a 15% stake to an international banking group. BNP Paribas and KB Kookmin Bank are reportedly holding separate discussions with the Vietnamese lender. Techcombank is expected to choose only one investor if the talks progress. A formal agreement has not yet been reached.
The Deal Could Be Worth Around $2 Billion
The valuation is the part that gets attention. Techcombank is reportedly seeking a price equal to roughly twice its book value. That would put the 15% stake at close to $2 billion. The figure would make the transaction a substantial foreign investment in Vietnam’s banking sector.
A Deal Could Be Completed Before Mid-2027
The timing remains flexible. Sources cited in the report said a transaction could close before the end of 2026. It could also slip into the first half of 2027. That leaves plenty of room for negotiations to change. Regulatory approval and final pricing would also matter.
Techcombank Would Gain Its First Major Foreign Strategic Investor
Techcombank has grown into one of Vietnam’s largest private banks without a major foreign strategic shareholder. A 15% investment would change that structure. It could bring fresh capital, international expertise, and closer ties with a large global banking group. The strategic value may matter just as much as the money.
BNP Paribas Already Has a Presence in Vietnam
BNP Paribas is hardly new to the Vietnamese market. The French banking group already operates in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. A stake in Techcombank would give it a much deeper position in the country. Instead of relying mainly on local branches, BNP Paribas would gain exposure to a large domestic customer base.
KB Kookmin Could Also Expand Its Vietnamese Footprint
KB Kookmin Bank is another serious contender. The South Korean lender already has operations in Vietnam. Buying part of Techcombank would strengthen that position considerably. It would also fit a broader pattern of Korean financial groups expanding across Southeast Asia.
Foreign Banks Are Already Buying Into Vietnam
The potential Techcombank transaction is not happening in isolation. Foreign banks have been building positions in Vietnamese lenders for years. Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation bought a 15% stake in VPBank for about $1.5 billion. Mizuho Bank also acquired a 15% stake in Vietcombank back in 2011.
Vietnam’s Banking Market Is Becoming Harder to Ignore
Vietnam remains one of Southeast Asia’s faster-growing banking markets. Rising incomes and digital adoption are expanding demand for financial services. Domestic banks are also investing heavily in technology. That combination makes established lenders more attractive to foreign investors. Techcombank sits in a particularly strong position because of its scale.
Techcombank Now Serves More Than 18 Million Customers
Techcombank was founded in 1993. It has since grown into a major retail and business bank. The lender now serves more than 18 million customers across Vietnam. It also manages about $48.76 billion in assets. That scale helps explain why a minority stake could command such a high valuation.
A Strategic Investor Could Bring More Than Capital
The bigger question is what happens after the deal. A global banking partner could bring expertise in digital banking, risk management, wealth services, and cross-border finance. Techcombank could also gain access to new corporate relationships outside Vietnam. The foreign investor, meanwhile, would get direct exposure to a large Vietnamese banking platform.
The $2 Billion Price Tag Shows How Valuable Vietnam Has Become
A 15% stake at around $2 billion would send a fairly clear message. Foreign banks are willing to pay heavily for access to Vietnam’s financial sector.
The deal is still only under discussion. BNP Paribas may win it. KB Kookmin may win it. Negotiations could also end without an agreement.
Still, Techcombank reaching this stage says something about the market. Vietnam’s banks are becoming strategic assets for global financial groups, not just regional investments.
That trend looks increasingly difficult to ignore.
