ANZ has found its next cybersecurity chief.
The Australian banking group has appointed Sandro Bucchianeri as its new chief information security officer. He joins from National Australia Bank, where he has served as group chief security officer since 2021.
Bucchianeri will officially take up the role on November 11, 2026. He succeeds acting CISO Shane Ripley. The permanent position had been open since Dr Maria Milosavljevic retired in April.
The hire comes at an interesting time for ANZ. The bank is strengthening both its cybersecurity and AI leadership as financial institutions face more complex digital risks.
Sandro Bucchianeri Moves From NAB to ANZ
Bucchianeri is crossing from one major Australian bank to another. He currently serves as group chief security officer at National Australia Bank. He has held that position since 2021. His move to ANZ will place him in charge of the bank’s information and cybersecurity strategy. The appointment gives ANZ an executive with experience across several large financial institutions.
He Brings International Banking Security Experience
Bucchianeri’s career extends well beyond Australia. Before joining NAB, he worked in South Africa at Absa Group. He spent four years leading technology security there. Earlier roles included group chief security officer at National Bank of Abu Dhabi. He also served as CISO at Investec. His background includes consulting and cybersecurity leadership across several markets.
ANZ Wants a Threat-Led Approach to Cybersecurity
ANZ says Bucchianeri will lead its information and cyber security strategy. His mandate includes building a more threat-led and risk-informed approach across the bank. He will also work with teams across the organisation to improve cyber maturity. Risk management and security capability will form a large part of the role. Bucchianeri will report to ANZ group chief information officer Donald Patra.
The Appointment Follows Maria Milosavljevic’s Retirement
ANZ had been searching for a permanent CISO since April. Dr Maria Milosavljevic retired after almost three years in the position. Shane Ripley stepped in as acting CISO while the recruitment process continued. Bucchianeri will now take over the permanent role in November. The transition gives ANZ a new security leader as cyber threats continue to grow across banking.
Cybersecurity Leadership Is Becoming More Important for Banks
Banks are handling more digital transactions, cloud systems, mobile services and AI tools than ever. That expands the number of systems security teams need to protect. It also creates more opportunities for cybercriminals. Financial institutions therefore need security leaders who understand both technology and operational risk. ANZ’s appointment reflects that shift. Cybersecurity is no longer treated as an isolated IT function. It sits much closer to business strategy and customer trust.
ANZ Is Also Building Out Its AI Leadership
The CISO appointment follows another major technology hire at ANZ. Earlier in 2026, the bank recruited Kai Yang from HSBC as its first chief data and AI officer. Yang joined after more than six years in data and analytics leadership roles at HSBC. He also previously worked at Commonwealth Bank.
Creating a dedicated AI leadership position showed how seriously ANZ is treating artificial intelligence. Adding an experienced CISO soon after highlights the other side of that strategy. Banks want faster AI adoption, but they also need stronger controls around data, security and operational risk.
AI Growth Makes Cybersecurity Even More Complicated
Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities for financial institutions. It is also adding fresh security concerns. Banks are using AI for customer service, fraud detection, analytics and internal operations. Those systems depend on large amounts of sensitive data.
That creates a difficult balance. Financial institutions want to move quickly with AI, but security teams need to control access and protect information. They also have to monitor new attack methods powered by AI. A strong relationship between data, AI and cybersecurity leadership will become increasingly important.
ANZ Is Reshaping Its Technology Leadership Team
Bucchianeri’s appointment looks bigger when placed beside ANZ’s other executive moves. The bank now has dedicated leadership across information technology, cybersecurity, data and artificial intelligence. That structure reflects how digital banking is changing.
Cybersecurity, AI and data management are becoming tightly connected. A weakness in one area can quickly affect another. For ANZ, bringing Bucchianeri into the CISO role gives the bank another experienced executive as that transformation continues.
The appointment itself is straightforward. The timing is what makes it more interesting. ANZ is expanding its AI ambitions while also strengthening the security structure around them.
