Segpay hires Tom John as CTO

Segpay has appointed InsitesData co-founder Tom John as its new chief technology officer, handing him responsibility for the payment processor’s technology operations during a period of rising transaction volumes and international expansion.

The Florida-based company provides online payment processing, automated billing and subscription management services to digital merchants. Segpay says its infrastructure currently supports more than 50,000 businesses across 75 countries.

John’s arrival follows what Segpay described as the strongest financial year in its two-decade history. The timing looks deliberate. Growth creates opportunity, but it also puts pressure on payment infrastructure, fraud controls and the systems handling merchant transactions behind the scenes.

Tom John Takes Control of Segpay’s Technology Operations

As CTO, John will oversee Segpay’s technology team and broader technical operations.

Those responsibilities previously sat with Marco Escobar, who will remain with the company as vice president of operations. The arrangement separates Segpay’s technology leadership from its day-to-day operational management while keeping an experienced executive inside the business.

Segpay has not publicly detailed John’s immediate technical priorities. Still, the company’s recent expansion suggests that payment reliability, platform capacity and regional payment integrations will likely sit high on the agenda.

John Brings CTO and Data Analytics Experience

John joins Segpay after co-founding business analytics company InsitesData with CEO JC Carey in early 2025.

He served as both chief technology officer and chief information officer at the company, giving him responsibility across product technology, data systems and internal information infrastructure.

Before launching InsitesData, John and Carey worked together at fintech and marketing technology provider WelSpot under a similar leadership structure. John left that venture in December 2025.

That background gives Segpay a technology chief with experience spanning payments-adjacent services, business analytics and executive-level systems management. It is a useful mix for a company processing recurring payments across multiple markets.

Segpay Is Expanding Beyond Traditional Card Payments

Segpay has operated since 2005 and built much of its business around e-commerce merchant accounts, subscription billing and multi-currency credit card processing.

The company has also been broadening its payment options beyond card networks. Recent additions include support for bank-transfer systems such as SEPA in Europe and Faster Payments in the United Kingdom.

That shift matters. Online merchants increasingly want customers to pay through local methods rather than forcing every transaction through an international card network.

More payment choices can improve conversion rates, but they also make the technology stack harder to manage. Each new rail brings its own settlement process, compliance requirements, fraud risks and technical connections.

John inherits that complexity.

Record Revenue Growth Adds Pressure to Scale

Segpay reported a 12% year-on-year increase in revenue for 2025, its highest financial performance since the company launched 20 years ago.

The processor linked the growth to increased transaction activity across its core merchant sectors, including subscription-based businesses and other online service categories. Its integration partnership with PayPal also contributed to the expansion.

Strong revenue numbers make the appointment look less like a routine executive change and more like an effort to prepare the platform for its next stage.

Payment companies rarely struggle because demand disappears. Problems often arrive when transaction volumes grow faster than infrastructure, customer support or risk systems can handle.

Why the Segpay CTO Appointment Matters

Segpay operates in a part of fintech where merchants expect transactions to work quietly and instantly. Customers may never see the processor’s name, but they notice immediately when a payment fails, a subscription renews incorrectly or a preferred payment method is missing.

That puts the CTO role close to the centre of the business.

John will need to balance platform stability with expansion. Segpay is adding payment methods, supporting merchants in dozens of countries and processing more transactions than before. All of that must happen without creating unnecessary friction for customers or exposing merchants to added operational risk.

The company has momentum. Now it needs the technology underneath that growth to keep pace.
