BBVA first entered Italy with its digital offering in 2021 and has since grown to serve more than 700,000 customers.
Spanish banking giant BBVA has named Walter Rizzi as country manager for digital banks at its division in Italy, effective immediately.
Rizzi brings more than 20 years of industry experience to the position. He begun his career at Accenture, before spending over 18 years at McKinsey & Company. He later went on to serve several executive positions at Italian fintech Banca AideXa, including chief data officer, deputy general manager, and chief product and customer officer.
In his new role, Rizzi will report directly to Murat Kalkan, BBVA’s global head of digital banks, with primary responsibility for tailoring the bank’s offerings to meet the specific needs of the Italian market.
BBVA established its digital banking presence in Italy in 2021 and has since grown to serve over 700,000 customers. The bank’s Italian portfolio includes money management tools, credit cards, paycheck advances, SEPA transfers, and mortgage products, with more than 1,000 mortgages arranged during the first year of offering.
Rizzi’s appointment comes as BBVA continues to strengthen its digital presence across Europe, including operations in Spain, Italy, and most recently Germany. The banking group has been expanding its global digital banks unit, with recent additions including Fernando García as head of engineering and operations, and Luis Calleja as head of product and marketing, both joining in June.
