Empathy, a technology company redefining how individuals cope with grief and manage end-of-life logistics, has raised $72m in a Series C funding round to further scale its compassionate support platform.
The round was led by Adams Street Partners, with continued backing from previous investors General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Entrée Capital, Brewer Lane Ventures, SemperVirens, Latitude, and LionTree, according to InsurTech Insights.
Additional strategic investments came from leading global insurers including Aflac, Allianz, Citi, Munich Re, MetLife, New York Life, Securian, and TIAA—many of whom joined as founding members of the newly launched Empathy Alliance.
With the new funding, Empathy aims to further scale its operations, enhance its AI capabilities, and expand its recently introduced product, Empathy LifeVault™.
LifeVault is a secure, digital solution for legacy planning, allowing users to create and store legally binding estate plans and critical documents with ease.
The company also announced the formation of the Empathy Alliance, a collaborative initiative involving insurers and strategic partners to reshape societal standards around grief and bereavement support.
The alliance’s founding members, many of whom participated in the Series C round, are aligned with Empathy’s goal of delivering accessible and dignified care at scale.
“We’re honoured to support millions of families in their toughest times and to have earned the trust of leading organisations,” Empathy CEO Ron Gura said. “This milestone is not just a testament to our progress—it reflects a broader cultural shift in how we think about and support those navigating loss. We see it as both a privilege and responsibility to keep raising the standard of care.”
Adams Street Partners partner Tom Bremner said, “Empathy is addressing a critical need with a thoughtful, mission-driven approach. We’re excited to support the company’s continued growth as it expands access to essential resources through innovation and industry-leading partnerships.”
Currently operating in the U.S. and Canada, Empathy has forged partnerships with eight of the top ten life insurers in the U.S., and serves over 1,000 employers, including several Fortune 500 companies. The platform now supports nearly 50 million individuals, with 7 million recently gaining access to LifeVault through partners such as Aflac, New York Life, and Voya.
Empathy has now raised a total of $162m since its inception.
