Citation Group acquires PayCaptain

Citation Group has expanded its payroll technology capabilities with the acquisition of PayCaptain, a UK-based payroll software company known for its automated payroll platform and employee-focused financial wellbeing tools.

The deal adds new payroll functionality to Citation’s existing suite of HR, compliance, and workforce management solutions. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

PayCaptain Brings Automated Payroll and Financial Wellbeing Tools

Founded in 2020 by former Fourth operating chief Simon Bocca, PayCaptain provides automated payroll software for UK businesses. The platform also includes employee-focused features such as savings tools, budgeting support, and wage advance capabilities.

PayCaptain has built a growing customer base across the UK, with users including Roadchef, TGI Fridays, Dishoom, NEOM, Charlie Bigham’s, and Monica Vinader. The company also works with partners such as ClearBank, Caxton, and Payrocks.

According to Citation, PayCaptain has nearly doubled its year-on-year revenue for 2025 and maintains a 98% customer retention rate.

Citation to Integrate PayCaptain Into Payroll Division

Following the acquisition, PayCaptain’s technology will be gradually integrated into Citation’s HR and workforce management software offering. The integration is expected to take place over the coming months.

PayCaptain will continue to operate under Citation’s dedicated payroll division and will be available to businesses either as standalone payroll software or as a managed payroll service.

Citation has also confirmed that existing PayCaptain customers will see no immediate changes to their platform, service, or support.

Simon Bocca to Continue Leading PayCaptain

As part of the acquisition, Simon Bocca will remain with the business as managing director of PayCaptain.

Bocca said joining Citation gives PayCaptain the scale, distribution, and platform needed to accelerate its mission faster than it could have done independently.

Citation Expands Its Payroll Technology Portfolio

The PayCaptain acquisition follows Citation’s purchase of foundU, a Brisbane-based payroll software provider, in April 2025. That deal helped Citation expand its payroll technology reach beyond the UK and Canada into Australia.

By adding PayCaptain, Citation is strengthening its position in payroll software and workforce management technology, particularly for businesses looking for automated payroll solutions combined with employee financial wellbeing features.

Why This Acquisition Matters

The acquisition highlights continued consolidation in the payroll software market as HR, compliance, and workforce management providers look to offer more connected platforms.

For Citation, PayCaptain adds a modern payroll solution with strong customer retention and embedded financial wellbeing tools. For PayCaptain, the deal provides access to a wider customer base and greater resources for growth.

As payroll technology becomes more closely linked with employee experience, financial wellbeing, and workforce management, the Citation Group acquires PayCaptain deal could help the company compete more effectively in the evolving HR tech and payroll software sector.
