HSBC hires NatWest’s David Lindberg as new UK CEO

Former Westpac exec David Lindberg has been appointed as the new CEO of HSBC UK, effective 8 December 2025. Lindberg will succeed Ian Stuart, who has held the position since April 2017 and will now move to the role of group customer and culture director, as confirmed by the bank in March.

Lindberg joins HSBC from NatWest Group, where he has served as CEO of retail banking for the past five years, leading brands such as RBS, Ulster Bank, and Holt’s. Lindberg is also currently chairman of the bank’s Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) division, NatWest Boxed.

Prior to NatWest, Lindberg spent over a decade in various leadership roles across three of Australia’s ‘big four’ banks, including managing director of marketing and strategy at ANZ; executive general manager of credit cards, payments, and retail strategy at Commonwealth Bank; and chief executive, commercial and business bank at Westpac

HSBC UK currently serves over 15 million personal and business customers, with Georges Elhedery, who took up the position of HSBC group CEO in September last year, describing the UK market as “core to our foundational strength as a group”.
