UK challenger Monzo has named NatWest’s Shelley Malton as its new group chief operating officer (COO). Malton is set to join the bank in early 2026 pending regulatory approvals.
Malton brings over three decades of financial services experience to her new role. She currently serves as director of operations at NatWest and has previously held the roles of managing director of service at Experian and director of customer services, operations and digital at Vodafone.
Notably, Malton previously worked at Barclays for 18 years, where she rose from sales manager to chief operations and technology officer at Barclaycard Europe.
At Monzo, Malton will work alongside CEO TS Anil and the executive team to drive the company’s international expansion plans.
Monzo has made a number of senior leadership appointments this year. Former Nubank executive Tom Oldham joined as group CFO in February, while Andy Smart was promoted from general manager of wealth to chief product officer in March.
Malton’s hiring ends Monzo’s search for a successor to Sujata Bhatia, who announced her decision to step away from the challenger after five years in the COO role earlier this year.
Monzo recently surpassed 13 million customers and reported a 48% revenue increase to £1.2 billion in FY2025.
