Citizens Financial Group has named Ted Swimmer as head of commercial banking, effective immediately. Swimmer, who previously led capital markets and advisory for Citizens Commercial Banking, brings over 25 years of banking industry experience to the role.
The appointment sees Swimmer succeed Don McCree, who has led the unit since 2015. McCree will remain with Citizens as chair of commercial banking until his retirement at the end of March 2026. His departure continues a series of senior executive transitions at the bank, following the March retirement of Beth Johnson, who served as vice chair and chief experience officer.
Swimmer joined Citizens in 2010 from North Carolina’s Wachovia Corp, where he spent more than 12 years as head of leveraged finance. During his 15-year tenure at Citizens, he has served as executive vice president and head of capital markets before his role expanded in April 2017 to include advisory services. He joined the bank’s executive committee in 2018.
According to Citizens, Swimmer has helped expand the bank’s capabilities “beyond traditional loan financing to add sector expertise and offer a comprehensive set of solutions, including debt, equity and M&A advisory across the client lifecycle”.
The bank, established in 1828 and among America’s oldest financial institutions, will also welcome Barclays’ Aunoy Banerjee as its new EVP and chief financial officer (CFO) on 24 October 2025. Banerjee will replace John Woods, who departed on 15 August 2025 after serving as CFO since February 2017.
