Tyl, the card payment processing business launched by British bank NatWest in June 2019, has been selected by hospitality-focused tech firm Akru to process payments for its point-of-sale (POS) solution powered by Zonal.
Tyl by NatWest will now serve as the preferred payments partner for Akru, providing payment processing capabilities for Akru’s POS solution built for independent hospitality venues and small chains.
According to a joint statement, the partnership will enable Akru’s users to streamline sales transactions and inventory management while also “eliminating the traditional friction points between separate systems”.
Steve Roberts, managing director at Akru, says that by integrating payments into the company’s cloud POS, “we’re able to offer hospitality businesses across the UK an end-to-end solution that’s simple to use, but powerful enough to support their growth and ambition”.
Akru is a division of Edinburgh-based Zonal Group and uses the vendor’s technology to power its POS solution. Roberts previously worked as a commercial director at Zonal Retail Data Systems before moving to Akru in January 2024. The business also provides kitchen management systems, self-checkout kiosks, and Akrupay, an embedded payment processing solution launched in February this year.
Akru’s latest partnership enables Tyl by NatWest to “further expand its reach in the hospitality sector”, the joint statement continues. The bank’s merchant acquiring business has maintained a similar partnership deal with Ingenico SoftPOS, formerly Phos, since June 2023, as well as the Federation of Small Businesses since May 2024. Tyl by NatWest was formerly led by Mike Elliff up until September last year, when Elliff was succeeded by the division’s former product chief James Hodgson.
