Unity Trust Bank (UTB) in the UK has appointed industry veteran Martin Barrett as its new chief operating officer, effective immediately, with a focus on “unlocking business growth potential in new sectors and segments”, according to a statement.

The position has previously been held by former M&S Bank exec Lindsey Podolanski, followed by HSBC veteran Mark Clayton, who moved to serve the role for Triodos Bank in January last year.

UTB says the new COO will look to expand operations, improve operational capabilities, and develop “technological solutions and products to create a seamless customer experience”.

Barrett assumes this remit following a 24-year career at Lloyds Banking Group, where he held several key positions, including change management programme director overseeing the TSB and Halifax Bank of Scotland merger in 2009, head of payment operations, and most recently, banking operations director.

He will work under Colin Fyfe, who succeeded Deborah Hazell as CEO of UTB in January 2024. Founded in 1984, UTB in a trade union-owned bank headquartered in Birmingham, providing specialist business banking services to trade unions, charities, and not-for-profit organisations, expanding its coverage to include profit-with-purpose businesses in 2015.
